Instructions:
Use a pipette to accurately transfer 10 mL of water sample
Add the water sample into a clean conical flask
Add one pack of total hardness (Ⅰ) reagent, shake well to dissolve. If the solution is blue, it means the water hardness is lower than 0.4 mg/L. If it is purple, continue to step 4.
Use a pipette to accurately transfer 1 mL of total hardness (II) reagent
Titrate slowly while shaking the conical flask until the solution changes from purple-red to pure blue. If there is no color change after dropping 1 mL, repeat steps 4 and 5 and record the total volume of titrant consumed V (mL)
Total hardness = V × 200 (mg/L, in CaCO3)

Common interferences:
Metal ions such as iron, manganese, aluminum, copper, nickel, and cobalt can cause the indicator to fade or the end point to be unclear. Sodium sulfide and potassium chloride can mask the interference of heavy metals.
Hydroxylamine hydrochloride can reduce high-valent iron ions and high-valent manganese ions to low-valent ions to eliminate interference
The color of the liquid itself will also interfere, and suspended or colloidal organic matter can affect the observation of the endpoint. In this case, the water sample can be evaporated and incinerated at 550℃ to remove the interference.
