Sulfate is one of the most common inorganic anions. Sulfate is widely present in nature and has basic applications in the chemical industry or other industries. It is also the most common negatively charged ion substance in sewage and wastewater. The main physiological reactions after ingesting a large amount of sulfate are diarrhea, dehydration and gastrointestinal disorders. People often use water with a magnesium sulfate content of more than 600 mg/L as a cathartic. When the mass concentrations of calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate in water reach 1000 mg/L and 850 mg/L respectively, 50% of the respondents think that the taste of water is unpleasant and unacceptable.
The main sources of sulfate in water are sulfates of stratum minerals, mostly in the form of calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate; dissolution of gypsum and other sulfate deposits; seawater intrusion, oxidation of sulfites and thiosulfates in fully aerated ground water, and domestic sewage, fertilizers, sulfur-containing geothermal water, mining wastewater, leather making, and industrial wastewater using sulfates or sulfuric acid in paper making can all increase the sulfate content in drinking water. In addition, the atmospheric pollutant sulfur dioxide may also be oxidized into sulfur trioxide under the action of oxygen and form sulfates and return to nature.
